色 | Purple Porridge

I have a jacked-together set-up to blog from! Wau. Currently lounging on my couch with an early 00's PC wireless keyboard, that ironically requires wires to work. It's like hammering my fingers into the past. Not impressed but less so impressed with my computer, which decided to lose it's sound and webcam too. The danger for percussive maintenance tendencies is high.

Here's some shots from this week! Instagram is a massive yes IMO - no resizing, no fiddling, just click-click done. (I'm tahtisyrjala on there!)

I'm still new to the art of phone-photography, haha. I find it a really fun medium, though - I've always used digital or SLR cameras with tripods, so this downgrade is making it more of a challenge, and therefore more fun! I only entered the marvelous world of smartphones in May so I am probably finding this more exciting than I should. However, retaining semi-Luddite qualities for a few years leads to far more fun/confusion once it ends! (^.^) probably because I'm so late on the bandwagon, but w/e. Enjoy my enthusiasm, heheh.

I hope everyone is having a good summer! Not that in the UK we can really say we are having a summer... most days are grey, but that's okay. I spend most of the season inside complaining about sunscreen anyway. I also prefer running in the rain - which I have taken up again, happily! Speaking of which, I'm not entirely sure what I should and shouldn't be posting in regards to my recovery/disorder. It's very new territory for me too to be 'okay' with a lot of this, so it's baby steps to find a middle I can be comfortable with. I get a lot of messages on my Tumblr about my writing, all positive - I stress that - and so I think I'll continue with that. I will be keeping that 'side' to Tumblr. If you have an issue with anything I have posted or post in the future, please tell me! Or if you have any questions.

Here is a recipe for you! This was a requested recipe & that's all good with me - I love, love, love oats. The days of tasteless millet/rice/cardboard porridge are banned from my existence, now I rejoice with certified gluten-free oats. Hurrah for allergy progress and tasty food! I like to eat porridge for breakfast, and therefore try and cram as much 'good stuff' in there as I can. I think the tastiest way is to combine it in a kind of 50/50 smoothie-porridge, and this is what I've made here! It naturally sweetens it and provides a really creamy texture.

The berries make this a beautiful colour - mainly down to them tasty blueberries. This is the first in a series - I'll be writing a recipe series on this theme! Rainbow Porridge. What colour should I do next? I think pink, for sure!

Purple Porridge (vegan and gluten-free!)

1/2 c blueberries
1/2 c strawberries
1 small banana
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c oats
1 1/2 c dairy-free milk (I used half almond, half soy)
Optional :
1 tbsp flaxseed

Chop the fruit, reserving two strawberries for topping.
Mix the banana, strawberries and half the blueberries with the milk & vanilla in a small pot, and gently heat. Leave it cook through for 2-3 minutes.
Now you can choose whether to blend the fruit! I use a hand-held blender, takes about 10 seconds to puree. You can also mash it with a fork, or leave it as is - it will cook through and soften.

Pour in the oats and optional flaxseed. (I used Linwood's Cocoa & Berries - it's amazing!) Cook the oats until they have broken down and are creamy - about 5-7 minutes.
Midway through, add the other half of the blueberries - this is what makes it a really yummy looking purple!
Add a few more blueberries if you want, top with strawberries, and seriously - enjoy!

Do you call it oatmeal or porridge? I lean towards words that don't come out super-American in my accent... hence porridge. I reckon it's a UK thing, haha - I get mildly berated when I say 'gar-aaahje' instead of 'gar-ajj', for fear that I will infect others with my influence. Apparently it's serious business when you say sidewalk instead of pavement. Okay no, there's an element of truth in that but joking aside, I tone down my accent because everyone around here asks me if I'm Canadian. WTF. Before I moved here I had never, ever been called Canadian. I completely fail to see it but the good folk of Merseyside are clearly onto something I am not.
It's so strange for me to be here sometimes. One day I'll write properly about it. I still feel somewhat lost and alien to my surroundings, but I have a lot of love for this place.

I want to share with you this person who made me happy. The day was so hot. Walking home I saw this man standing in front of the blue garage - just wishing people well as they walked by, greeting strangers, talking about the sun. I love seeing things like this so much, they give meaning. His shirt was the exact colour of the paint, and he looked so happy.

I asked to take his picture, and he said, "sure - as long as it's in colour!"

  1. I really want to try this recipe, it seems so good !
I have a question; where do you find oat flakes certified gluten-free ?
In biological shops in France, it's always written it might have gluten. As I'll move to the UK soon, it could be great if I find a shop which sells gluten-free oat flakes !

    Have a nice day,
