Blazer & Biscuits

Our Christmas party yesterday was really quite fun - even though all the actual dinner was eaten before I got to have a plate. Somewhat disappointing, but what can you do - I'm going on a last minute shopping trip tomorrow, so I'll fill in the pleasure gap with some much-awaited sushi. I finally have something food related to post, also! I made this recipe up yesterday - I realize a few hours before a party is not exactly the time for experimentation, but what can I say - a life lived on the edge with biscuit-related excitement is so much more worth living. It's somewhat fiddly and time-consuming, but the result is so worth it! Really delicious and perfect with strong coffee. I made quite a few other things, but none of which I photographed - I think in retrospect I should have documented the most ridiculous thing I have ever created, which was an amalgamation of complete sleep deprivation, cubism, ten minute periods of staring in confusion, over-caffeination, hysterics to my mother and carrot cake. Be that as it may, it wasn't, perhaps it's for the better that any evidence of that was lost to the netherworlds of other peoples digestion...

Someone on my Formspring asked me today did I like dubstep - which made me laugh, but also made me realize I hadn't posted enough in far too long! So here's a few tracks - as always, turn your bass and your volume up. This is what I wore yesterday - skirt, shoes and jacket are from Topshop, blouse is from American Apparel. Make-up wise - Illamasqua Rich Liquid and Powder Foundation in 100, Coygirl/Well Dressed/Strada blush - my favourite combination - Handwritten, Saddle and Brown Script E/S and Fling B/P on brows, Omega, Blanc Type and Carbon E/S on eyes with #35 lashes. and now... a recipe!!

  • 2.5 cups of plain flour
  • 0.5 cups of ground almonds
  • 0.25 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1.5 cups of butter
  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 1 cup ground almonds
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 cups of caster sugar (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 egg whites
In a bowl or an electric mixer, mix the powdered sugar, flour and ground almonds. Cut the butter into the mixture until it is evenly crumbly, and stir in the cream - the resulting mixture will be quite sticky. Wrap in cling film or tinfoil and leave in the fridge for three to four hours.
Mix the topping ingredients together, apart from the egg whites - crack and whisk slightly in a separate bowl. Work with the dough in four parts, leaving the remaining dough in the fridge when you're working on one part. Dust your work surface with flour, and then over that, sprinkle an even layer of caster sugar. Roll the dough out into an even thickness, and cut into shapes using a glass or a cutter - the one I used was about 1.5" wide, although you could use a larger cutter. When you're re-rolling the scraps, try and shake off the sugar underneath as much as you can - if it gets too ingrained into the dough, the biscuits will turn out incorrectly. When the pieces are cut, lay them onto a wire rack, brush with egg white, then sieve an even amount of the topping mixture on them. Lay them carefully on a baking tray, and bake for 15-20 minutes - keep an eye on them! Repeat this process with all the dough. Enjoy!
